J-PAL Common Application
Our annual recruitment drive and nearly all positions posted on our website require applicants to apply through our common application.
To be considered for positions, it is important to complete all sections of the common application. Incomplete applications will generally not be rated and included in the database shared with hiring managers during the annual recruitment drive.
A complete application includes: a CV/resume, statement or purpose (cover letter), transcripts, an explanation of international and developing country experience, languages, and a list of courses taken in economics, mathematics, and statistics. Additionally, for most positions, you will be asked to include the names and email addresses of two to three individuals who will provide your letters of recommendation. Because the application system will immediately send an email to your recommenders, we suggest you reach out to your letter writers prior to providing their information to J-PAL.
Recruitment outside of the J-PAL recruitment drives is conducted position by position. Each position will have specific application instructions attached to the posting. For most positions, applicants are asked to fill out the common application and send an email with CV to the hiring manager. Please read these instructions carefully and follow them exactly. Some positions may ask for additional material.
Selection and Interview
J-PAL is a network of research centers and academics who run research projects around the world. Though we have a centralized application database, the hiring process is highly decentralized. J-PAL staff, researchers, and hiring managers will browse applicants by a rating of application strength, geographic location, flexibility, and language skills. After our winter recruitment drive, short-listed applicants are contacted for interviews from the end of January through the spring. After our spring recruitment drive, short-listed applicants are contacted for interviews from the end of May and through the summer. Candidates may receive interviews from several researchers or organizations throughout the selection process.
Please read all sections of our FAQ page for further advice on filling out the common application, applying to specific jobs, and the selection process.
