The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation is a nonpartisan, private charitable foundation that advances ideas and supports institutions to promote a better world. The foundation provides core funding support to J-PAL Africa and J-PAL Global to generate policy-relevant evidence on social programs in developing countries, build partnerships for evidence-informed policymaking, and help partners scale up effective programs in sub-Saharan Africa and beyond. To help meet growing demand in sub-Saharan Africa for training and capacity building, the foundation provides scholarships for students from sub-Saharan African countries to complete J-PAL and MIT’s MicroMasters and blended Master’s degree programs in Data, Economics, and Development Policy. The foundation also supports J-PAL’s Governance Initiative to fund rigorous impact evaluations of interventions designed to improve participation in the political and policy process, reduce corruption and leakages, and strengthen state capacity in developing countries. Our affiliated professors are based at over 130 universities and conduct randomized evaluations around the world to design, evaluate, and improve programs and policies aimed at reducing poverty. They set their own research agendas, raise funds to support their evaluations, and work with J-PAL staff on research, policy outreach, and training.
