Kellogg School of Management’s Strategic Initiatives Department is looking to hire an Initiative Manager to collaborate with Professor Dean Karlan to develop and manage both a research initiative on how evidence influences policy, practice and behavior as well as two courses on effective philanthropy and social impact.

Many evidence-based interventions with positive and reliable effects are not immediately or widely adopted by relevant policy decision-makers. Likewise, when randomized controlled trials of popular programs reveal zero or even negative effects, decision-makers often fail to drop the intervention. The new “Evidence to Policy Initiative” within the Global Poverty Research Lab at Kellogg will explore the obstacles and opportunities to connect evidence to policy.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Coordinate and manage the Global Poverty Research Lab’s Evidence to Policy Initiative. This initially includes four components: (a) an interdisciplinary working group of Northwestern University faculty to explore research on the process of evidence adoption, (b) a research portfolio of ongoing and new projects on the process of evidence adoption, including for example adoption of effective philanthropy principles into charitable giving, as well as adoption of evidence-based policy and practice; (c) Build and manage an active communication strategy for the initiative; and, (d) Two courses, one for MBAs and one for undergraduates, that cover social impact topics and require collaborative work with nonprofit organizations and social enterprises.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Master’s degree or PhD in economics, social sciences, public policy, or related fields
  2. 5+ years project management or other relevant experience.

Minimum Competencies:

  1. Strong analytical skills
  2. Dedication to furthering the promotion of evidence into policy, practice and behavior
  3. Excellent writer and presenter
  4. Comfort reviewing and applying academic impact evaluation literature
  5. Statistical and econometrics knowledge: ability to review and interpret and critique the results of program evaluations, often but not always randomized controlled trials and quasi-experimental methods
  6. Ability to manage multiple independent projects and stakeholders
  7. Demonstrated ability to work well in teams and collaborate effectively
