The Global Poverty Research Lab (GPRL) is a research center based at Northwestern University that uses empirical evidence to address the challenges of overcoming poverty and improve well-being in the developing world. Areas of interest include child health, gender equity, microfinance, conditional cash transfers, social networks, insurance, and agriculture. GPRL is affiliated with the Economics Department at Northwestern and housed within the Buffett Institute for Global Studies.

Job Description

The Economics Department and GPRL are hiring a full-time research analyst to begin in November 2018 (start date very flexible). This is a one year position (with possibility of extension) that entails assisting with empirical analysis on randomized evaluations and “natural experiment” projects within development economics, under Professor Lori Beaman and additional GPRL faculty. The primary topics of the projects are agriculture, social networks, and gender equality.

The research analyst will perform a variety of tasks including but not limited to:

  • Cleaning data and preparing data sets for analysis
  • Conducting preliminary statistical analysis and preparing tables and figures with empirical results
  • Assisting in the writing of project reports
  • Writing literature reviews and summarizing background information for projects
  • Assisting in the design of survey questionnaires

Qualifications and Experience:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in economics or another quantitative major
  • Candidates should have an interest in applying to a quantitative Ph.D. program (preferably in economics) and in pursuing a research career
  • Strong programming skills including experience with statistical software such as Stata
  • Strong quantitative skills
  • Experience as a research assistant
  • Excellent grades are required
  • The job is ideal for someone with an enthusiasm for empirical research, and the ability and interest to learn new skills and take initiative as a project develops

The position is located at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois (Chicago area), and offers the opportunity to interact with economics undergraduates, graduate students, faculty, and a community of research analysts at Northwestern. The research analyst will be a full-time employee of Northwestern University with full benefits (including the ability to take classes at a highly-subsidized tuition rate). We are looking for a minimum commitment period of one year for this position.
