Overview:

We are looking for qualified applications for the position of Research Associate to work on research projects in development economics and political economy in Kananga, Democratic Republic of Congo. This is an opportunity to gain field research management experience in the context of research in development economics and political economy. You will acquire management and analytical skills in this role. The position will require full commitment and long hours in a poor, remote setting.

This 12-month position (May 1, 2019 –  May 1, 2020) will be based in Kananga, DRC. You will chiefly report to Jonathan Weigel (Assistant Professor of International Development, London School of Economics), but also interface with Sarah Lowes (Assistant Professor of Economics, Bocconi University), Nathan Nunn (Professor of Economics, Harvard) and James Robinson (University Professor, University of Chicago), as well as Pablo Balán (PhD Candidate in Government, Harvard), Augustin Bergeron (PhD Candidate in Political Economy and Government, Harvard), Gabriel Tourek (PhD Candidate in Public Policy, Harvard).

Project description:

The Research Associate will provide support for several randomized evaluations currently taking place in the city of Kananga, DRC. Some of the ongoing interventions (1) assess the effectiveness of a land titling program, (2) compare the effectiveness of central and local tax collection, and (3) study the elasticity of tax compliance with respect to tax rate.

Responsibilities of the Research Associate:

  • Managing a team of enumerators, including trainings (in French)
  • Preparing and managing project materials
  • Managing project data with Stata
  •  Working closely with the principal investigators and the local partners running the program to ensure that the study protocols are followed
  • Tracking expenses

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) in economics, political science, or a related field
  • Strong quantitative skills and competence with Stata
  • Excellent management and organizational skills
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills
  • Fluency in French required (native speaker or advanced fluency)
  • Being detail oriented and able to work independently
  • Familiarity with randomized evaluations and econometric methods preferred
  • Experience living in a developing country preferred

Duration: May 1, 2019 – May 1, 2020.

Monthly Salary: $1,000.
