Senior Manager in Research, Education, and Training, with focus on Training - J-PAL
This position focuses on our course portfolio and capacity building work. It is part of J-PAL Global’s Research, Education, and Training (RET) team. RET is a diverse and integrated group that works together in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. We grapple for example with questions of privacy and research transparency and the challenges that arise in conducting responsible, yet innovative research; we apply quantitative measurement techniques and data analysis methods and train others in applying them; and we equip policymakers as well as researchers and research staff with the necessary knowledge to conduct randomized impact evaluations. J-PAL’s Training group introduces policymakers to impact evaluation methods, builds data analysis and field research skills of evaluation specialists, researchers, and research staff at J-PAL and its partner organizations, and disseminates the policy insights generated by affiliate researchers through case studies and Evidence to Policy workshops.
In this position, you will take a strategic leadership role in the oversight of J-PAL’s worldwide training portfolio and advising the work of J-PAL’s worldwide offices on trainings. This includes analyzing the reach and impact of our trainings and their contribution to J-PAL’s mission, and working with J-PAL leadership in the strategic planning for the Training group. Among your responsibilities will be to lead J-PAL Global’s efforts to train researchers, research staff, and policymakers in staff trainings, executive education programs, and online courses. You will oversee the work of a team of Training staff members who build out data analysis tools and new reference and teaching materials and act as teaching assistants or support for our online courses. You will build the strategy for the design, organization, and implementation of in-person courses for policy partners.
In your role you will represent J-PAL in interactions with high-level policy makers from governments, foundations, and NGOs, as well as with our affiliate researchers. You will work closely with our regional offices in Chile, France, India, Indonesia, South Africa, and the US, as well as J-PAL’s partner organizations, like Innovations for Poverty Action and the Center for Effective Global Action. You will travel frequently to liaise with these partners and lead the implementation of J-PAL’s Training strategy across the organization.
Training portfolio strategy and implementation:
- Take a strategic leadership role in the oversight of J-PAL’s worldwide training portfolio and advising J-PAL’s worldwide offices on trainings;
- Analyze the reach and impact of our trainings and their contribution to J-PAL’s mission, and work with senior management in the strategic planning for the Training group;
- Develop and pursue a funding strategy in cooperation with J-PAL leadership, write grants, and oversee the reporting on the Training group’s funded activities to sponsors.
Course development and teaching:
- Propose and conceptualize new training courses on randomized evaluations that can engage diverse audiences without compromising on precision and accuracy, and lead a team at J-PAL Global in creating them;
- Teach lectures and modules in training courses nationally and internationally;
- Set priorities and lead the development of new learning tools for J-PAL staff, including the professional development of mid-level training and research staff.
- Research and promote teaching best practice and the use of innovative methods in J-PAL trainings;
- Pursue the adoption of new education technologies (flipped classrooms, clickers, online courses, etc.) and evaluate the potential for carrying out randomized evaluations to test the effectiveness of such innovations and the overall impact of our training efforts;
- Oversee the implementation of in-person courses and online courses hosted or co-hosted by J-PAL Global which apply and test J-PAL best practices for our capacity building work.

Skills and qualifications
- Education: A Master’s or PhD degree in economics, political science, education, public policy, international development, or other related fields. Significant training in and a strong technical understanding of randomized impact evaluations is necessary.
- Experience: 6+ years of relevant experience with a Masters degree, including quantitative data analysis, 2+ years of relevant experience with a PhD including teaching and research experience during graduate school. You should be comfortable with presenting to technical and non-technical audiences and preparing tailored teaching materials. Experience in academic and non-academic teaching environments and/or in conducting field research in developing countries with a background in randomized evaluations required. Experience in management and collaboration in international teams is a plus.
- Interest in Development and Policy: Strong interest in poverty alleviation policy and research, as demonstrated by coursework and work experience. International development experience or extensive experience in social policy in other settings desired.
- Quantitative skills: Knowledge of data management, data analysis, and econometrics is required.
- Software: PowerPoint and Excel required; must have good command of Stata, or have knowledge of R, Python, or other analytics programs plus the ability and willingness to quickly learn Stata.
