Web and Digital Communications Specialist – J-PAL Global
- United States of America
J-PAL is recruiting a Web and Digital Communications Specialist in our Policy and Communications group to manage J-PAL’s website and support email marketing and video production, key communication tools in our mission of promoting evidence-informed policy worldwide. This position is based at J-PAL’s head office at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, MA.
The Specialist works closely with staff across J-PAL’s head office and regional offices to provide organization-wide web and multimedia management and support. As the manager of the J-PAL website, the Specialist will be an integral part of shaping J-PAL’s online presence, supporting the organization’s mission by communicating evidence to inform more effective policy.
The website is one of the primary tools through which J-PAL executes its mission of reducing poverty by ensuring that policy is informed by scientific evidence. With a repository of over 1,000 summaries of results of rigorous randomized evaluations conducted by our affiliated professors, a rich library of research resources, policy insights synthesizing evidence from a range of studies, and much more, the website is a critical platform for J-PAL’s policy and communications work.
As the Web and Digital Communications Specialist, your primary focus will be managing every aspect of J-PAL’s Drupal website, povertyactionlab.org, from technical functionality to digital content creation. You will be the main point person for fixing errors and troubleshooting bugs. You will also manage the relationship with our web developer, an external vendor, and work with them to rapidly resolve bugs and develop new and innovative features.
You will lead this critical platform for J-PAL, ensuring that content across the website is clear, consistent, and error-free by creating and implementing systems and workflows that prioritize user experience. In addition to adding and updating content through our Drupal CMS yourself, you will oversee and manage permissions for 50+ website contributors, train local and international staff on how to add and update content, and create and maintain process guides.
Digital feature development and project management
J-PAL is always learning and evolving, and our website changes frequently to reflect new features. You will be involved from start to finish in developing these new features, from conducting user research, to generating ideas about new features to incorporate and selecting which projects to prioritize, to gathering necessary inputs from our internal content and design teams, to liaising with our external web developer to get the project implemented.
You will serve as J-PAL’s internal video project manager, working with an in-house video producer and a subset of the communications team to brainstorm ideas for new video content, develop and disseminate new videos, and manage J-PAL’s YouTube channel. For large-scale video projects, you will manage all aspects of video production with external vendors, from conception and storyboarding to execution and dissemination.
You will lead annual strategic planning for digital communications, working with staff across the organization to develop a strategic plan and obtain buy-in from internal stakeholders. You will be the expert on J-PAL’s website analytics, using dashboards and reports from Google Analytics to determine what’s working, what’s not working, and why. You’ll take the lead in adjusting strategy as needed, report out to all staff quarterly on overall website health, and recommend and implement strategies and tactics to improve the website and related outreach. You will work with J-PAL’s IT team to improve the integration of J-PAL’s digital platforms (e.g. Drupal, Salesforce, email marketing platforms).
You will be a valued member of J-PAL’s communications team, working with the Director of Policy and Communications, Policy and Communications Manager, Senior Designers, and J-PAL’s Executive Director, as well as staff across J-PAL’s Policy, Communications, Research, Education, and Training groups, to contribute to J-PAL’s broader external communications strategy. This includes producing digital content for social media, newsletters and email marketing, training programs, and policy events.
