Catalog of Administrative Data Sets

Administrative data are information collected, used, and stored primarily for administrative (i.e., operational), rather than research, purposes. These data can be an excellent source of information for use in research and impact evaluation. Specific requirements and processes for obtaining data vary by data source. To assist researchers in screening potential data sources, J-PAL North America has cataloged a number of key US data sets. The catalog documents procedures on how to access data based on information provided by the originating agencies.

Initially created to collect information on hospital discharges, SPARCS collects patient-level data on patient characteristics, diagnoses and treatments, services, and charges for all hospital inpatient stay and outpatient visits in the state of New York. SPARCS also includes data on all ambulatory surgery visits, emergency department admissions, and extended outpatient treatments from NY licensed centers.

Student enrollment, course records, financial aid data, personnel files, facilities records, and finance data submitted by public colleges and universities in Ohio.

Department of Human Services (DHS), Oregon Health Authority (OHA), Office of Forecasting, Research, and Analysis (OFRA)

Individual-level data on clients served by most OHA and DHS programs. ICS compiles information from a variety of data sources and de-duplicates client records from within and across programs. ICS data include eligibility, enrollment, and service episode information in addition to geographic and employment information.

Individual-level data on all citizens who are registered to vote in the State of Oregon. Voter files include registration status, voting activity, as well as geographic information.
