Enrique Seira is the Joe and Deborah Loughrey Professor of Economics at the University of Notre Dame and a Fellow of the Kellogg Institute. His research focuses on development economics, democracy, credit markets, and the judicial system. His current interests center on democratic backsliding and policies to prevent it, improving the functioning of courts and justice systems in developing countries, and understanding the causal effects of religion on personal well-being and social outcomes.
He has published widely in leading academic journals and has received numerous awards, including the Citi Banamex Prize (five times), the Simonsen Prize, and the Urquidi Prize. Seira previously served as Director of Mexico’s premier Center for Economic Research at ITAM. He is a research affiliate of BREAD and founded an NGO to support field research in Mexico. He has worked at the IFC, the Ministry of Finance (Treasury), the Ministry of Economics, and the Central Bank of Mexico.
Enrique has a PhD from Stanford University. He has served as a lecturer at J-PAL training events.
