Senior Research Associate, J-PAL South Asia

Shruti Nag is a Senior Research Associate at J-PAL South Asia, where she designs and implements early childhood interventions focused on foundational literacy and numeracy. Her initial work at J-PAL South Asia centered on adapting evidence-based math games for caregivers and children in low-income communities in Delhi, and supporting implementation through training and field engagement.

She is currently developing and testing play-based literacy instructional designs,grounded in cognitive science, in collaboration with the Laboratory for Developmental Studies at Harvard University for early grades in government schools of Delhi. Her work spans instructional design, capacity building with caregivers and field teams, and generating evidence to support program scale-up across geographies and languages.

Shruti has over 20 years of experience in education research and implementation across South Asia. At Pratham, she led curriculum design, large-scale teacher training, and learning improvement initiatives. At Room to Read (Nepal and Bangladesh) she contributed to early grade literacy program design, including developing teaching-learning materials and training teachers and field teams. At the Azim Premji Foundation, she worked with the Institute of Assessment and Accreditation to develop institutional assessment tools for schools. She also serves on the advisory board of Tinkerlab, a play-based preschool in Gurgaon.

Her publications include School and Society Interface in Urban Slums (with Smitin Bird) and Integrated Learning Improvement Programme West Bengal (with Shaktibrata Sen), published in a report commissioned by the Government of India and the International Labour Organisation.

She holds a masters degree in sociology from Jamia Millia Islamia University and a BA (Hons.) in sociology from the University of Delhi.
