Sohini Mookherjee

Sohini Mookherjee is the Associate Director of Training at J-PAL South Asia, based in Mumbai, where she heads the Training and Capacity Building vertical. She is also the Director of CLEAR South Asia and the India Climate and Health Data Capacity Accelerator (IDCA), and a member of J-PAL South Asia’s Senior Management Team. Her work focuses on strengthening government capacity for monitoring, evaluation, data use, and evidence-informed policymaking. She has led institutional partnerships with the Royal Government of Bhutan, Karmayogi Bharat, NITI Aayog, the Ministry of Statistics, and multiple state governments across India, including Odisha, Meghalaya, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Punjab.

Sohini’s experience spans government partnerships, capacity building, monitoring and evaluation, data and evidence use, and policy engagement, with sectoral work across gender, climate, public health, and governance. More recently, she has worked at the intersection of climate, health, data, and public policy, including strengthening the use of data and AI for public-interest challenges. She has taught at platforms including IPDET and the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration. She is also a Principal Investigator on a J-PAL randomized controlled trial on gender and public transport safety in Bengaluru and is involved in evidence gap mapping work in climate and health.

Prior to joining J-PAL South Asia, Sohini worked with Lokniti – Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS) in New Delhi and as a Graduate Teaching Assistant in the Department of Political Science at Georgia State University.

Sohini holds a PhD in Political Science from Georgia State University, where she received the Outstanding Graduate Student of the Year award. She also holds a Bachelor’s degree (Hons) in Political Science from Presidency College, as well as a Master’s degree and an MPhil, both with First Division, from the Centre for Political Studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University.
