Job summary

DIL is seeking a full-time Data Coordinator to work closely with Faculty Director Michael Kremer and DIL’s Data and Analytics team to help ensure primary data quality across the Lab’s portfolio of development economics projects.

Formal employment will be through an in-country employer of record (“EoR”) under contract with DIL. Additional details regarding salary, benefits, and terms and conditions of employment offered by the EoR will be provided to individuals during the hiring process.

Responsibilities

In partnership with the DIL Data and Analytics team and project teams, support survey data collection for DIL’s research projects to ensure rigorous data quality.

  • Design and review questionnaires, SurveyCTO survey instruments, data collection manuals, calls for proposals, and data quality assurance plans prepared by research teams.
  • Develop and standardize protocols for survey programming, data collection, and data cleaning for large-scale evaluations (primarily RCTs).
  • Establish and maintain lab-wide quality benchmarks, including minimum requirements for survey pilots and audit reviews, for a team of 30+ researchers.
  • Train junior researchers on best practices for data collection and contribute to capacity building across the lab.
  • Oversee data collection for specific projects as required.
  • Provide input on cross-cutting lab activities or DIL public goods as required.

Minimum qualifications

  • Education
    • A Bachelor’s Degree in economics, public policy, or a related field by the start of the position
    • Advanced undergraduate or graduate-level coursework in statistics and/or economics
  • Experience
    • Minimum of ​2​ years of experience with data collection for research projects.
      • Experience managing data collection, including supervising survey firms, training field officers 
      • Experience conducting data quality monitoring, including spot checks and high-frequency checks
    • Advanced knowledge of research techniques and methods in relevant scientific fields.
    • Knowledge of impact evaluations, particularly, randomized controlled trials.
    • Knowledge of and experience with field work in developing countries. Work experience in countries where DIL has active projects (East Africa, South Asia, Latin America) is strongly preferred.
  • Competencies
    • Ability to communicate effectively across different cultural contexts
    • Demonstrated ability to deliver high-quality data to research projects.
    • Advanced skills with survey programming on an ODK-based platform.
    • Advanced skills using either Stata or R for data processing and analysis is required. Knowledge of both languages is strongly preferred.
    • Experience coding in a team environment and using GitHub is preferred.
  • Working conditions
    • The position will be based in a DIL country of operation, with a preference for locations in Bogotá, Nairobi, or Delhi. 
    • Candidates with work authorization in base location strongly preferred.
    • Candidates must be flexible and able to travel extensively across countries with active data collection, including, but not limited to East Africa, South Asia, and Latin America.
