J-PAL Africa is holding a webinar series in October for African students who would like to pursue graduate study in Economics, Public Policy, or related fields in North America or Europe. The webinars are for those who intend to apply in the next few months, as well as those who do not intend to apply immediately but would like information on what graduate study in Economics abroad involves and how best to prepare oneself to enter a graduate program.

Webinar 1: How to Prepare for Graduate Study Abroad

This webinar targets Africans who would like information on pathways to acquire the skills and experience that set you up for graduate study abroad and strengthen your application. In addition to representatives from the Economics PhD Applicant Mentoring Programme (AMP) and Pathways to Research and Doctoral Careers (PREDOC), we will have current African PhD students who can speak to the process they followed and their experience thus far, as well as a research in the J-PAL network who has completed her studies in the United States and works at the University of Ghana. 

Webinar 2: PhD Application Advice for Universities in the United States and Canada

We will have admissions faculty from the PhD programs of schools in the United States and Canada, including the University of Virginia, MIT, University of Minnesota, University of Michigan, University of Houston, Tufts University, Northwestern University, University of Illinois, University of Toronto, McGill University, and Yale. The webinar will involve a panel discussion covering the most common questions around pursuing a PhD in North America, followed by a break-out session where participants will have a chance to engage directly with an admissions officer. We will also share an information pack containing some of the key details of pursuing a PhD at each of the schools represented at the webinar.

Webinar 3: PhD Application Advice for Universities in Europe

At our final webinar, we will have faculty from Masters and PhD programs from a range of European universities based in Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, Sweden, and the UK. The webinar will involve a panel discussion covering the most common questions around pursuing a Masters or PhD in Europe, followed by a question and answer session where participants will have a chance to ask questions directly to faculty. We will also send out an information pack containing some of the key details of pursuing a graduate degree at a range of schools in Europe.
