Shyamal Chowdhury is the Rajiv Gandhi Chair of South Asian Economics at the Crawford School of Public Policy, Australian National University, where he also leads the Australia South Asia Research Centre (ASARC). His research focuses on development economics, specifically the economics of seasonal migration, the development of non‑cognitive skills in children, microfinance, and technology adoption. He has conducted research in South and Southeast Asia, and sub‑Saharan Africa.
Shyamal also serves as the Secretary of the Australasian Development Economics Association (ADEA), Chair of the Australian Development Economics Workshop (ADEW) Committee, and Research Fellow at the Institute of Labor Economics (IZA). Prior to joining ANU, he was a Professor of Economics at the University of Sydney and held research roles at the World Bank and the International Food Policy Research Institute.
Shyamal holds a PhD in agricultural economics from the University of Bonn.
