Sohini Mookherjee
Lead, J-PAL South Asia
Sohini Mookherjee is a Project Director at J-PAL South Asia, where she leads the Capacity Accelerator Network (CAN), an initiative by Wellcome and Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth that works with governments and social sector organizations to strengthen how data is used for decision-making in climate and health, along with other special initiatives. CAN invests in both supply and demand: building both the talent pipeline of purpose-driven data and AI practitioners and the capacity of social impact organizations to employ workers skilled in responsible use while strengthening the data capabilities of organizations working in climate and health. She is part of the Senior Management Team (SMT) of the South Asia office and works closely with the senior leadership team to set the direction of J-PAL South Asia.
She has experience building monitoring, evaluation, and evidence-use systems across governments, multi-laterals, and civil society in South Asia. Her work focuses on translating data and rigorous research into actionable insights for policy, and on building systems that enable sustained use of evidence within public institutions.
She has previously served as Interim Associate Director of Training and Director of CLEAR South Asia, leading large-scale capacity-building partnerships that move beyond one-off trainings to durable institutional capability.
Sohini is also a Principal Investigator on a randomized controlled trial with J-PAL on gender and public transport safety in Bengaluru, examining how behavioural interventions can improve bystander response and reduce sexual harassment.
Sohini completed her PhD course work from the Department of Political Science at Georgia State University Atlanta, USA where she was awarded the Outstanding Graduate Student of the Year award. Sohini holds a BA (Honors) in Political Science from Presidency College, Kolkata and MA (First Class) and MPhil (First Class) from Center for Political Studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.
