Overview

The UM6P-J-PAL Applied Lab for Agriculture (UJALA)  contributed as a partner to the first edition of the Autumn School “Socio-Economic Strategies for Sustainable Development in Rural Africa,” held at the University Mohammed VI Polytechnic (UM6P) in Benguérir from October 27–31, 2025. The event was organized by Université Paris-Saclay and UM6P, with the support of the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF).

The five-day event brought together PhD students and researchers from Africa, Europe, and North America across diverse disciplines, including economics, agronomy, climate sciences, sociology, engineering, and social innovation, for an interdisciplinary dialogue on science-based solutions to rural resilience and food security.
Event Program

The program combined lectures, methodological workshops, and applied case discussions focused on rural transformation and sustainable development. UJALA contributed through a workshop on designing randomized impact evaluations rooted in field realities, as well as a plenary session highlighting lessons from experimental research in sub-Saharan Africa.

The discussions throughout the week underscored the importance of locally grounded research, cross-disciplinary collaboration, and stronger links between scientific evidence and public decision-making in advancing sustainable rural development.

The Autumn School brought together PhD students and researchers from Africa, Europe, and North America across diverse disciplines—including economics, agronomy, climate sciences, sociology, engineering, and social innovation—for an interdisciplinary dialogue on science-based solutions to rural resilience and food security.
