Evidence with Its Ear to the Ground

Good policy is built on more than theory. It needs data that reflects real lives, research shaped by people and places across India, and a strong community of researchers connected to the ground. Evidence only works when it understands the rhythms, challenges, and aspirations of the communities it hopes to serve.

For twenty years, J-PAL South Asia has partnered with researchers, students, and data specialists across India to anchor rigorous research in local experience and bring practical insights to the nation’s most pressing development priorities.

To nurture and grow our India-based community of academics and practitioners, we focus on:

  • Expanding access to funding, mentorship, and learning opportunities for Indian academics
  • Strengthening data science and evaluation skills of India’s next generation of development professionals
  • Building research partnerships that connect universities, governments, and civil society around shared priorities
  • Together, these programs are creating a stronger foundation for research and policy collaboration across India
