Climate change is no longer a distant threat; it is a daily reality that deepens inequality worldwide. The poorest countries, and the poorest people within countries, are the ones who contribute the least to the problem yet face its gravest consequences. As recent analyses from different studies show, most projected climate damages will fall on low- and middle-income countries, while emissions from wealthier nations continue to rise. The “Global Climate Grand Bargain” proposes a new framework of shared responsibility and fairness, linking mitigation, adaptation, and compensation in a coherent system where both high-income and developing countries have clear, complementary roles.

On November 13 at 11 AM, Esther Duflo will present Just Economics: A Grand Bargain for Climate Mitigation, Adaptation, and Compensation at Sesc Bom Retiro, in São Paulo. The talk will explore how global carbon pricing, automatic transfers to vulnerable households, and locally driven adaptation programs can become the foundation of a more just and effective global response to climate change. This presentation aims to inspire dialogue on how to help design mechanisms that combine moral responsibility with pragmatic solutions, ensuring that climate action also advances equity and development.
