Sandip Sukhtankar is a Professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Virginia and Co-Scientific Director of J-PAL South Asia. His research interests lie at the intersection of development, political economy, and public economics, with a focus on governance and the delivery of public services. His research has been published in top journals such as the American Economic Review, Econometrica, Science, American Economic Journal: Applied Economics, Review of Economics and Statistics, and the American Political Science Review. 

Sandip is a member of the Board of Reviewing Editors at Science, a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), and a Fellow of the Bureau for Research and Economic Analysis of Development (BREAD). He received his PhD from Harvard University in 2009, and a BA from Swarthmore College (with Highest Honors) in 2000. He previously worked at Dartmouth College, the Brookings Institution, and the Center for Global Development, and has also served as a co-editor of the Journal of Public Economics and Lead Academic for the International Growth Center (IGC-India),

Sandip has served on the review board of J-PAL's Social Protection Initiative, and as a mentor to J-PAL regional scholars. He has also lectured at J-PAL training events.
