Barriers to International remittance transfer and the role of Mobile Financial Services

On a global scale, migrant remittances are one of the largest international financial flows to developing countries with growing trends in total remittance growth. Consequently, understanding how remittances are sent and used, and identifying the challenges in reducing the cost and transfer process remains an open question. Especially in the digitized world where mobile money transfer channels are often superior in terms of service-related features such as cost, speed, control, security and timely access by the recipients. In this project development study, we will explore the current practice of sending remittance by Indonesian international migrant workers (and their families) and understand the barriers to adopting digital financial services which will help us to develop a future randomized experimental study.
