J-PAL North America Advanced Research Training in Evaluation, Methods, and Impact Studies (ARTEMIS) 2026
Overview
J-PAL North America will host the Advanced Research Training in Evaluation, Methods, and Impact Studies (ARTEMIS) Program, beginning with a summer institute held in Dedham, MA on June 22-26, 2026. The program supports early-career academic researchers, PhD students, and postdoctoral students through technical training and practical skill building to design an RCT on issues of poverty in the US context. Participants will learn how to integrate quantitative, qualitative, and participatory methods into their research designs, enabling them to center community partnerships and bring an equity lens into their research. Through an intensive week-long course and six months of ongoing mentorship and proposal development support, ARTEMIS participants work directly with J-PAL academic researchers and senior J-PAL staff to design and pursue funding for their first RCT.
Applications will be open until April 8, 2026.
Who should apply?
ARTEMIS is tailored for early-stage academic researchers, PhD students, and postdoctoral students who are affiliated with a US institution or conducting work in the United States. The program targets technically skilled researchers who would benefit from hands-on guidance, mentorship, and additional support to design rigorous, policy-relevant evaluations. Ideal participants will have strong technical skills; competency with quantitative research methods; a research question focused on poverty alleviation that is well-suited for a randomized evaluation; and could benefit from direct guidance and mentorship to move from a promising research idea to a funded study.
ARTEMIS is open to all qualified applicants regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, age, ability, or sexual orientation.
ARTEMIS Activities
- Invitation to a 5-day in-person summer institute—held from June 22-26, 2026 in Dedham, MA—to learn from J-PAL–affiliated faculty and experienced research staff who bring deep knowledge of randomized evaluations, funding pathways, and policy-relevant research, offering insight grounded in both academic rigor and practical experience. Lectures, coupled with hands-on workshops, will help participants apply new concepts to their own research and facilitate peer-to-peer learning and collaboration.
- Six months of continued study design and proposal development support. ARTEMIS participants will engage in monthly strategy sessions with expert J-PAL staff members to advance their research proposal. Through a research design workshop series, participants will also have the opportunity to present and receive feedback on the designs of their early-stage RCTs from the extensive J-PAL research network and J-PAL staff.
- Personalized introductions to researchers in the J-PAL network with shared research interests to pursue collaborative evaluation projects.
Fees
ARTEMIS is a fully funded program with no participant fees. Programming includes lodging and all meals during the summer institute. There are a limited number of travel stipends for individuals traveling from outside of the Boston metro area.
