Improving Ghana’s National Health Insurance Biometric Card Renewals: A Randomized Control Trial Using Reminders And Moving Renewal Dates

This pilot study seeks to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of mobile money–based renewals for Ghana’s National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). Researchers will test different reminder systems to identify the most effective way to encourage timely renewals and assess whether these reminders reduce out-of-pocket payments at health facilities. The study will also explore the feasibility of aligning renewals to a fixed annual period in February and examine whether the impacts of reminders and renewal behaviors differ by gender or COVID-19 exposure. Findings will inform strategies to strengthen digital service delivery and health coverage through the NHIS.
