Improving the supply of mobile money towards better financial inclusion: The case of Democratic Republic of the Congo

Financial inclusion is a critical component of poverty reduction and sustainable development, particularly in developing countries like the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Despite the potential of mobile money to expand financial services to underserved populations, challenges on the supply side limit its effectiveness. This proposal aims to address these barriers by focusing on improving the liquidity of registered agents (RAs) who facilitate mobile money transactions in the DRC. The project will engage key stakeholders, including the government, mobile network operators (MNOs), and banks, to explore solutions that ensure RAs have sufficient liquidity to meet daily demand. Based on the findings of a qualitative and quantitative assessment of RAs, this project proposes to develop a randomized controlled trial (RCT) to test interventions that provide additional liquidity to agents, to increase transaction volumes and completion rates.
