Leveraging National Identification And Digital Payment Systems To Nudge Informal Pension Contributions In Ghana

In Ghana, old-age pensions are essential for social protection, yet coverage remains limited among informal workers due to challenges in collecting regular contributions and widespread mistrust in pension schemes. This randomized evaluation tests whether digital tools can improve participation and trust in pensions for the informal sector. The study introduces mobile-based pension payments linked to national digital ID cards to enhance security and convenience. It also examines whether personalized voice messages explaining the benefits of pensions can motivate greater savings. Researchers will analyze differences in contribution behavior by gender and explore how experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic shape attitudes toward long-term saving. The findings will offer insights into how digital payments and identification systems can expand pension coverage and financial inclusion among informal workers.
