JOI Brazil is a J-PAL initiative that seeks to generate scientific evidence on public policies related to pressing challenges in the Brazilian labor market.

To improve labor market conditions, what strategy should we choose? To help answer this question, in 2020, J-PAL launched the Jobs and Opportunity Initiative (JOI) to generate evidence on policies that address urgent labor market challenges. In May 2021, J-PAL Latin America and the Caribbean launched the Jobs and Opportunity Initiative Brazil (JOI Brazil) in partnership with the Arymax Foundation, B3 Social, Tide Setubal FoundationPotencia Ventures, the Inter-American Development Bank, and Insper to translate JOI’s global work to the Brazilian context. By funding and supporting rigorous research, JOI Brazil has helped improve the quality of the debate on Brazil’s labor market and disseminate evidence-based knowledge to governments, civil society, companies, and foundations across the country. Research grounded in rigorous evidence is essential to identify what truly works and to scale mechanisms that consistently improve people’s lives.

For Decision Makers

Evidence in Labor Market Policies and Implications for Brazil

Besides generating new evidence related to labor markets and opportunities, JOI Brazil seeks to promote a culture of evidence-informed policymaking and disseminate what we have already learned from evaluations. The series of publications, "Evidence in Labor Market Policies and Implications for Brazil," reviews existing research around critical labor market issues and considers its policy implications for the Brazilian context.

For Implementers

Social Incubation

With its social incubation, JOI Brazil seeks to support evaluation projects that contribute to answering urgent questions about the Brazilian labor market. The social incubation aims to support organizations to develop their theories of change and monitoring and evaluation plans in a systematic and robust manner. We also seek to stimulate the generation of new research through technical assistance in developing evaluation and monitoring plans and conducting randomized impact evaluations. The social incubation is free of charge and registration is open to any organization interested in conducting impact evaluations whose themes are part of the priority themes of JOI Brazil.

For Researchers

Request for Proposals (RFP)

JOI Brazil funds randomized impact evaluations in Brazil, whose themes are aligned with the initiative's research agenda. Through a request for proposals (RFP), the funds are aimed at answering questions that are academically relevant and that add new knowledge to the literature.
