Overview and Description

The Egypt Impact Lab (EIL) and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) are hosting a learning workshop that brings together policymakers and practitioners to strengthen evidence ecosystems in urban planning. The workshop, part of the Urban Planning and Infrastructure in Migration Contexts (UPIMC) project funded by Switzerland's State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), will be held in the presence of senior government officials from Egypt’s Ministry of Local Development; Ministry of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities; the New Urban Communities Authority (NUCA); as well as other government officials from the Damietta, Alexandria, and Cairo Governorates.

The event combines high-level policy dialogue with practical technical training, and is designed to bridge the gap between research and policy implementation in urban planning policies, through:

  • Introducing the UN-Habitat Integrated Urban Planning Framework and the Urban Planning and Infrastructure in Migration Contexts (UPIMC) Methodology.
  • Providing hands-on technical training on Geographic Information System (GIS) tools for urban planning.
  • Promoting policy discussions based on evidence and research, enhancing capacities for data-driven decision-making.
  • Equipping local practitioners with practical tools to collect, analyze, and utilize data in planning and policy formulation.

The event, scheduled for May 26 to 27, 2025, in Alexandria, marks a significant step in strengthen inter-agency collaboration and knowledge-sharing at the city and regional levels

The two-day program features keynote addresses from government representatives and intensive training sessions on evaluation methodologies. The workshop is tailored for representatives from the key ministries and governorates mentioned above, and attendance is therefore by invitation only.
