Improving the Working Conditions of Domestic Workers in Brazil

About 70% of domestic workers in Brazil have less than a high school education, their work is still largely informal with low wages, and they often face abuses from employers, such as inflexible and unpaid work hours. The objective of this project is to explore strategies to increase opportunities and quality of work for domestic workers in Bahia, Brazil. The intent is to develop local partnerships to conduct evaluations on interventions such as (i) filling information gaps and facilitating the search for other jobs; (ii) providing job training to increase their earning potential in their current jobs and alternative opportunities; and (iii) encouraging families to formally register them according to the law, allowing them new legal protections.
