Scaling the personalized adaptive learning program in Andhra Pradesh, India

The Government of Andhra Pradesh (GovAP) in India has launched one of the first government-run personalized adaptive learning (PAL) with edtech programs in over 500 schools. This program was designed based on existing evidence that PAL is an effective pedagogy that fosters remedial learning and addresses learning gaps in foundational literacy and numeracy where children lag behind grade-level skills. It is potentially a cost-effective way to address pandemic-related learning loss and inequities in access to education where investments in edtech have already been made. The GovAP wants to learn whether their PAL program is improving learning and whether it is worth scaling to more schools. However, the effectiveness of education interventions, including learning through the use of edtech, when conducted at scale, can be sensitive to implementation features. In collaboration with the GovAP, this project will conduct randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to 1) estimate the impact of the GovAP’s PAL program, and 2) study how the program can be designed to be more effective at scale.
