Senior Research Associate, J-PAL Latin America and the Caribbean
Tomás Alburquerque is a Senior Research Associate at J-PAL LAC where he works on a number of experimental evaluations on microfinance lead by Prof. Natalia Rigol (Harvard Business School), Prof. Ben Roth (Harvard Business School), and Prof. Dean Karlan (Northwestern University). Evaluations are conducted with one of the largest microfinance institutes in Chile, Fondo Esperanza, and involve designing, launching, and measuring the impact of a new flexible credit product; understanding the role that incentive structures play on loan officers; and measuring the impact of providing emergency credits during crisis on borrowers and their businesses.
Prior to joining J-PAL in 2020, he worked as an international consultant for different organizations as ILO, UN Women and the CEQ Institute, and as the Coordinator of the Employment Department at the Chilean National Service of Training and Employment. Tomás holds a Master of Public Administration (MPA) in Public and Economic Policy from The London School of Economics and Political Science, and a Bachelor of Science in Economics and a Business Engineering degree from the University of Chile.
